Sea turtle nesting season on Marco Island, Florida, typically spans from May 1 to October 31. However, female loggerhead sea turtles generally nest from May through early August. During this period, the turtles journey hundreds of miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the island's sandy beaches to lay their eggs, with each nest containing over 100 eggs. Marco Island usually hosts around 80 nests annually. After about 60 days, the eggs hatch, and hatchlings emerge, usually between early July and the end of October. The hatchlings use the moonlight reflecting off the horizon to navigate their way to the ocean.
